A versatile sailing area with beautiful scenery and fun ports
Explore the Bommelerwaard by log cabin boat and spend the night in one of the old river branches. Here you can really unwind and enjoy the moment. Moor at a quiet beach where you can have a BBQ and build a campfire. Or keep going up the Meuse past pretty villages to the fortified town of Heusden. Dine out and stay overnight in the atmospheric city harbour. This is guaranteed to be a holiday to remember.
Visitors rave about this prime location! You can tell from everything that the Bommelerwaard sailing area is inextricably linked to water. On this ‘island between the rivers’ you will find a dynamic nature reserve between the Meuse and Waal. By log cabin boat, the stretch of Meuse from Lith to Heusden is navigable. Your starting point? The point where Meuse and Waal just barely miss each other, the old fishing village of Heerewaarden!
Besides the Meuse, you will find a number of larger lakes and river branches. These were created from the 1960s onwards as the river’s flow direction was altered or sand and gravel was excavated. Today, lakes like the Alemse Gat, the Zandmeren and the Afgedamde Maas are an ideal place to swim with the whole family or moor at a beach and roast marshmallows over a campfire late into the night. Bring on those scary stories!
Make time to enjoy all the beauty nature has to offer here. At dusk, you often spot beavers, kingfishers and other ‘rare’ aquatic animals. Watch the sun slowly sink into the water and the sky take on the most amazing colours. The Bommelerwaard sailing area disconnects you from the everyday hustle and bustle. You don’t need an alarm clock here either. Nothing is better than waking up the next morning to the twittering of birds around you.
The Bommelerwaard in brief:

- Sailing on the Meuse yourself, there is always something to see!

Sailing routes
The Bommelerwaard sailing area entails the part of the river Meuse between Lith and Heusden. You are not allowed to moor on the Meuse. This is allowed in the many river branches and sand holes beside the Meuse: the Lithse Ham, the Zandmeren, the Gat van Sientje, the Alemse Gat, the Afgedamde Maas and the Neswaarden.
Staying on the log cabin boat for a week or more? Then you could possibly sail on to the Biesbosch.
Note: You may NOT take the log cabin boat through the locks al Lith, Heerewaarden and at Andel.
Spend the night in nature
In the Bommelerwaard, nature gets all the space it needs. Along green banks, trees with their feet in the water are interspersed with grassland full of blooming flowers. In the Bommelerwaard, you can always find a beautiful nature spot where you can spend the night undisturbed, with waterbirds as your only neighbours!
On the natural beaches and grassy banks where there is enough open space, you are allowed to light a campfire, but always make sure you do this safely.
Visit the old fortified town of Heusden
About 3 hours of sailing from the boarding location is Heusden. This restored Brabant fortified town has a beautiful old centre and is well worth a visit. Moor the log cabin boat in the cosy city port. This way, you are right in the centre near the many restaurants and terraces. After a night out for dinner and drinks, you’ll be back on board in no time!
Tip: get a slice of freshly baked artisan bread the next morning at Bakkertje Deeg
Spot special animals
Of course, boating in the Bommelerwaard is super fun, but the experience becomes truly unforgettable when spotting wildlife. From your mooring spot, you can often take beautiful walks through the area. From your log cabin boat, spot the impressive Scottish highlanders and wild horses; several herds roam freely in the area.
The quiet moments at dusk are the best time to look for beavers and kingfishers. In the Alemse Gat, you can look for turtle Diego who only shows up occasionally. With a bit of luck, you’ll feast your eyes!
Experience true adventures!
Grab the SUP or canoe and have your own adventure in the many sand and gravel holes along the Meuse. (No canoeing or SUPping on the Meuse itself.) If you get hot from all that paddling, just plunge into the fresh water.
The Bommelerwaard has beautiful fishing spots for you to cast a line. You can then fish for typical freshwater fish such as pike, zander and bream, but catfish also swim around here.
