Loonse Waard

Beautiful nature reserve with lots of birds

Sand and ceramic clays were mined in the Loonse Waard for many years at the end of the last century. This has created a popular recreational lake, which can also be used for swimming. After the flood periods of 1993 and 1995, the area is used as an overflow area of the Meuse. Efforts are being made to make the banks more natural and nature-friendly to restore plant and animal habitats and improve water quality. This lake therefore lends itself well to barbecuing in the great outdoors – just be careful not to get your meat eaten by hungry cows! – If you stay overnight, you will be woken up in the morning by bird sounds; the kingfisher is a regular guest here. If you have your fishing rod and fishing permit with you, you can also fish beautifully here.

If you don’t feel like cooking for yourself, you can easily moor at restaurant Hoogeerd on the landing stage. You can also have breakfast or get an ice cream there.
