The Biesbosch Museum Island lIsland is located in the heart of the unique freshwater tidal area. It is the perfect place to learn about the past, present and future of the Biesbosch. Seven museum rooms and six cabinets chronologically present the history of the Biesbosch from the St. Elisabeth Flood. An animation of the St. Elisabeth Flood in which the disaster occurred over the Groote or Zuidhollandsche Waard in 1421 is the starting point of the tour of the museum. The museum also has a museum café Biesonder with waterfront terrace. It is also a great base for walking and cycling routes through the Noordwaard.

Play Island
Thanks to the Biesbosch, surrounding, more elevated areas cannot simply flood. How does that work? Experience it in the ‘Biesbosch experience’. A scale model of the Biesbosch, complete with polders, dykes and streams. This model – measuring 30 by 30 metres – makes the hydrological functioning of the area immediately clear. You can see how meltwater from the Rhine and rainwater from the Meuse converge in the Biesbosch delta. Watch how the water level changes from low to high. Adjust the sliders and knobs yourself and affect the course of the water! The Biesbosch experience is open from April to October. During prolonged droughts, the Biesbosch experience may not work because of a shortage of water.

Outdoor museum De Pannekoek

De Pannekoek is the Biesbosch’s outdoor museum. It’s an osier bed complex (an
osier bed is a field with willows) of about 8 hectares in size that is right next to the Biesbosch
Museum. Part of this osier bed is cut annually and part is chopped every three years. The area has free access and hiking trails.
