The Moringerwaarden
Canoeing through quiet creeks and strolling through grassland
Magically beautiful nature reserve with special animals
Moringerwaarden is a nature development area with lakes, willow marshes and herb-rich grassland. This beautiful piece of nature can be found in the eastern part of the Gouden Ham. By log cabin boat, you can moor there using the spud poles to take a stroll or explore the two beautiful narrow creeks by canoe. From the Moringerwaarden, you are also close to hospitality facilities. Via the Maaslanden’s natural jetties, you can moor to grab a bite to eat or do an activity at Riverside.
Bird Island
This special protected part of the area is home to a variety of birds such as cormorant, spoonbill, white egret and also the kingfisher. You may also come across beavers here.
If you want to walk the hiking trail, leave the log cabin boat on the quayside near the green island. You can easily walk to the trail from there. It leads across a bridge over a narrow strip of land with many beautiful vistas of the inland lake. There is a wide variety of water and songbirds. The vegetation is very diverse. Especially in spring, you can enjoy the flowering hawthorn and dog rose. A little further into the area, you pass a swallow wall and meadows overlooking the Gouden Ham.
A herd of red poll cattle graze in this area. This nearly extinct ancient breed of cattle has been expanded into a pure red poll breed with the help of farmers and wildlife agencies in this area. In late spring, the cows give birth to calves that stay with them until autumn. Along the waterfront, you regularly encounter these curious residents. A beautiful sight!
